Friendliness Becomes Strength
Yoga Sutras 3.23
Meaning · English
Samyama on friendliness and the other qualities of heart that go with it gives each of them strength.
Three words carry the sutra. Maitri is friendliness, from mitra, a friend. Adi means "and the rest, beginning with." Bala is strength, force that can be relied on. So the sutra reads: on friendliness and its companions, strength. Samyama is the three inner steps of holding, steadying and absorbing practised together on one thing. Here the thing is a quality of heart, not an object or the body. Patanjali has already named these companions in the first chapter: friendliness toward the happy, compassion toward the suffering, gladness toward the good, and evenness toward what is wrong. This sutra says that samyama on them makes each a strong, dependable capacity rather than a passing mood. Why say it? The verses before concern the body, time and its end. This one shows that the same method also works on the character. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the strength to be real and born of the quality itself; he names friendliness, compassion and gladness, and the commentators generally add that evenness has no matching strength here. Patanjali does not describe how it feels, only that the strength is gained.
A rope woven from loose threads. Each thread alone snaps at a tug, but twisted together and pulled tight, the rope can hold a boat at its mooring. Friendliness held steadily in the mind works the same way: a thin, occasional feeling becomes something that bears weight.
1. Choose one quality from the list: friendliness toward a person you find easy to like. Sit quietly for five minutes this evening. 2. Hold that one person in mind and let only the plain wish for their good stay there. When the mind drifts, bring it back to the same wish. 3. Afterwards, notice, without judging, how steady that wish was and where it slipped. Repeat for a few days.
