Strength Through Samyama

Yoga Sutras 3.24

Meaning · English

Hold the mind steadily on strengths, and strengths come, such as the elephant's and others of its kind.

Three words carry this sutra. Bala is strength, force, the capacity to bear weight or push through. Hasti is the elephant, the plainest picture of strength anyone knows. Adi means "and so on", so the elephant is one example among many. The act itself, samyama, is not named here. It is carried over from the sutras before, where it means three things held together on one object: fixing attention, staying with it unbroken, and being absorbed in it. Read whole, the sutra says that samyama on strengths gives strengths, the elephant's among them. Patanjali is teaching that the result follows the object chosen. Sutra 3.23 already showed this with friendliness and the like, and 3.24 shows it for bodily force. Each object of samyama has its own fruit. Vyasa's Bhashya takes it in just this way: the strength one rests on is the strength one comes to hold, and he names other strong beings as further objects. Patanjali states this as a principle of how samyama works, and the elephant makes it easy to see.

An apprentice watches a blacksmith's forearms and hammer for months, so closely that her own arms start to swing the same way. Steady attention on one thing leaves the watcher shaped like it. The sutra says the same of samyama: the object held becomes the quality gained.

1. Choose one ordinary strength you admire, such as a porter lifting a load or a tree standing in wind. 2. Watch it for five minutes today without drifting to other things, and notice each time your attention slips away. 3. Afterward, write one line on what held your attention and what broke it. 4. Do not try to gain the strength. Only notice how closely attention can stay with one object.
