Meaning · English
By setting the light of the mind's higher activity upon an object, knowledge arises of what is subtle, what is screened from view, and what lies far away.
Take the key words one at a time. Pravritti is an activity, a going-out of the mind toward something. Aloka is light. Nyasa is a placing, a setting down, as when you rest a lamp on a table. Then come the three kinds of object: sukshma, the very fine or small; vyavahita, the covered, with something standing between; and viprakrishta, the far off, in distance or in time. The plain sense: when the mind's illuminating activity is set steadily on an object, that object becomes known, even when it is too fine to see, hidden behind something, or out of reach. Every word is accounted for. The activity is the mind reaching out, the light is its clarity, the placing is steadiness, and the three objects are the three limits of ordinary sight. Patanjali says it because the senses fail in just these three ways, and the sutras just before describe knowledge and power gained by holding the mind on one chosen thing. This sutra shows that same holding applied to what the senses cannot reach. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, reads the light as the mind's luminous activity and the three objects as the minute, the concealed, and the distant. The commentators generally follow him.
A torch carried into a dark attic. The beam does not make the boxes at the back, or the thing under the eaves; it only lets them be seen once it rests on them. The light is the mind's clear activity, the beam resting is its steadiness, and the dark corners are what lay beyond ordinary sight.
1. Today, choose one small ordinary thing, a leaf, a coin or a thread, and look at it for two minutes without reaching for your phone. 2. Each time your attention slips away, notice where it went, then place it back on the object. Do not count it a failure. 3. Tonight, recall one thing that was hidden or far away today, such as what lay behind a door or in another town, and notice how little attention you gave it. Only notice. Do not try to see it.
