Meaning · English
When the mind is held steadily and completely on the sun, in samyama, knowledge of the worlds arises.
Three words carry the sutra. Bhuvana means a world, a place where beings live; it comes from the root bhu, to be. Jnana is knowing. Surya is the sun. Samyama is the three inner steps of holding, staying and absorbing, practised together on one object. Taken whole, the sutra says that when the mind is held in samyama on the sun, knowledge of the worlds comes. Every word is accounted for: the sun is the object, samyama is the method, and knowledge of the worlds is the result. Patanjali's reason is that samyama is the tool of this whole chapter, and he is now showing it turned on different objects, each giving its own knowing. The previous sutra spoke of knowing what is subtle or far off. The sun is the largest, brightest thing in sight, so it is where knowledge of the wide world is placed. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, reads bhuvana as the layered worlds of the cosmos and sets out their order one by one. The commentators generally follow him in this.
A single lamp hung in the middle of a large hall lets a person see every corner, the doors, the far walls and the stairs. Looked at steadily, the one bright source shows the whole space around it. The sun stands for that lamp, and the worlds are the hall it lights.
1. Once today, at any hour, notice where the sun is by the light and shadows in the room or street. Do not look straight at the sun. 2. For two minutes, look at what that light touches: a wall, a tree, a floor. Name three things you can see only because of it. 3. Before bed, recall where the sun stood in the morning and where it stood at evening, and notice how much of your day was arranged around that one light.
