The Moon's Arrangement

Yoga Sutras 3.27

Meaning · English

Samyama on the moon gives knowledge of how the stars are arranged.

Three words carry the sutra. Candra is the moon. Tara means star. Vyuha means an arrangement, a laying out in order, the way soldiers are drawn up in ranks. Jnana is knowledge. Samyama, carried down from the verse before, is the three inner steps of holding, steadiness and absorption practised together on one object. The plain sense: when samyama is held on the moon, knowledge of the layout of the stars arises. The moon is the object. The star pattern is what becomes known. Why Patanjali says it: this chapter lists what each samyama gives. Each object yields its own kind of knowledge, and the sutras just before turn to the sun and the worlds. The moon is the next object in that sequence, and the sutra names its result without describing a method. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes it as knowledge of the arrangement of the stars. He does not add more. The later commentators mostly follow him. Some read the stars as the stars in their positions relative to one another, but the text itself says only arrangement.

Picture a lamp carried into a dark room at night. As it is held steady, the furniture comes into view and the room's layout is clear. The moon plays the lamp, and the steadiness of samyama lets the pattern of the stars show itself in order.

1. On a clear evening, step outside and look at the moon for two minutes without doing anything else. 2. Notice the stars near it. Which are bright, and which only appear when you keep looking? 3. Notice how the sky looks arranged, with some stars close together and others far apart. You are only noticing here, not trying for any special knowledge. 4. Notice when your attention wanders from the moon, and bring it back.
