The Pole Star
Yoga Sutras 3.28
Meaning · English
Holding the mind in complete focus on the still pole star, one comes to know how the other stars travel across the sky.
Three words carry the sutra. Dhruva means fixed, unmoving. Here it names the pole star, the one point in the night sky that stays where it is. Gati means going, the path something travels. Jnana means knowledge. Tad, "their", points to the other stars. One more word is understood from the sutras just before it: samyama, the three inner steps of focus, steady attention and absorption, practised together on a single object. Read whole, the sutra says that samyama on the fixed star gives knowledge of the stars' movements. Every word is there: the object is the pole star, the result is knowing how the rest move. Patanjali is working through a list of powers, and each one pairs an object with what samyama on it yields. The sun gave the worlds. The moon gave the arrangement of the stars. The pole star is the still point the others turn around, so it gives their motions. This rests on the earlier teaching that samyama brings knowledge of whatever it is held on. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the sutra plainly in this way, and the commentators do not stretch it further.
A child stands at the middle pole of a spinning playground roundabout and watches the riders go around. Because the pole does not move, every rider's speed and path can be read against it. The pole star is that pole, and the stars are the riders.
1. Tonight, stand at a window or step outside for five minutes. Choose one fixed thing, such as a roof edge or a lamp post. 2. Keep your eyes on it, and notice how the moon, a cloud or a passing light moves against it. 3. Look again after twenty minutes, and notice how much has shifted. 4. Do not try for any special knowing. Notice only how a fixed point makes movement easy to see.
