The Body's Arrangement

Yoga Sutras 3.29

Meaning · English

Holding attention steadily and completely on the navel centre gives knowledge of how the body is laid out and ordered.

Four words carry the sutra. Nabhi is the navel. Cakra is a wheel or circle, a place where things gather. Kaya is the body. Vyuha is an arrangement, the way an army is drawn up in ranks, each part in its place. Jnana is knowing. Put together: on the navel circle, knowledge of the body's arrangement. The act that joins attention to the place is samyama, the holding of attention on one object that the chapter has been building since its first sutras. Here the object is the navel centre, and the fruit is an understanding of how the body is ordered, not a vague sense of it. Every word is accounted for: the place, the holding, the thing known. Why say it? The two sutras just before turn samyama toward the sky, a far and external object. Patanjali now turns it inward, to the body one lives in and rarely sees whole. The same method, a different object. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the arrangement to mean the body's parts and constituents, set out in their proper order. Later commentators do not seem to disagree on this point, and the commentators agree the navel is the place of attention.

Picture a house with a central hall, every room opening off it. Stand in that hall and you see at once where each door leads and how the rooms sit beside one another. The navel, the middle of the body, is that hall: attention held there is said to show the body's whole plan.

1. Once today, sit or lie quietly for three minutes with a hand resting on your belly, just below the ribs. 2. Rest your attention on that one spot and let your breath move as it does. Do not try to change it. 3. Notice what you can feel from there: the rise and fall, warmth, any tightness, how the chest and hips seem to connect to it. 4. Afterward, write one line on what you noticed. Do not look for any special knowledge; simply notice.
