Meaning · English
Samyama on the hollow of the throat brings the stopping of hunger and thirst.
Three words carry the sutra. Kantha is the throat. Kupa is a well, a hollow pit; the throat is pictured as a well. Kshut-pipasa is hunger and thirst, two words joined. Nivritti is a turning back, a ceasing. Samyama, carried over from the verses before, is holding attention, steady meditation and complete absorption together on one object. Read whole: when samyama is made on the hollow of the throat, hunger and thirst cease to press. Patanjali gives this as one more result of samyama, in a run of verses where each place or object yields its own knowledge or steadiness. Here the object is the body's own place where hunger and thirst are felt as a dry, calling hollow. Vyasa's commentary, as the Bhashya is usually read, takes the throat as that hollow, and says that steadiness there ends hunger and thirst. Later commentators mostly follow him and add little. The sutra gives no method and no timeline. It names the place, the practice, and the result.
A kettle left whistling on a stove fills the whole house with its noise. Lift it off the flame and the sound dies away, though the kettle is unchanged. The sutra pictures hunger and thirst as that call from the throat, and attention held there as the lifting off.
1. Next time you feel thirsty, wait a minute before drinking. Sit still and notice where in the body the thirst is actually felt. 2. Name the place: lips, tongue, throat. Notice whether the feeling holds still or shifts. 3. Then drink, and notice where the feeling goes. 4. Do not skip meals or water to test anything. Noticing is the whole task.
