Steadiness Like a Tortoise

Yoga Sutras 3.31

Meaning · English

Perfect concentration on the tortoise-shaped channel brings steadiness.

Three words carry the sutra. Kurma is the tortoise, the animal that draws its limbs in and sits still. Nadi is a channel or duct, from a root for flow and for hollow stems. Sthairya is steadiness, firmness, the quality of not wavering. The sutra is about a place and a result. Patanjali teaches that when the mind is held perfectly on one channel, named for the tortoise, steadiness follows. Every word is accounted for: the place is the channel, the practice is the full, unbroken holding of attention there, and the fruit is steadiness. Patanjali says it because the mind is restless by nature, and the sutras before it have been showing that one object held completely gives a particular result. Here the object is chosen to give firmness. Vyasa's commentary places the tortoise-shaped channel below the throat well, in the chest. He says that when the practitioner concentrates there, the mind becomes steady, like a snake or lizard that has stopped moving. The later commentators add little to the place or the result.

A jar of muddy water is carried to a shelf and left alone. The swirling slows, the silt sinks, and the water stops trembling. The restless mind is the muddy water, and holding attention on one place is the leaving alone.

1. Sit on a chair once today for three minutes, feet flat, hands resting, breathing as usual. 2. Rest your attention on the middle of the chest, just below the throat. Do not search for anything there. 3. Each time attention wanders, notice where it went and return it to that place. 4. Afterward, note only how often it wandered. Nothing more is asked.
