Meaning · English
Without birth, without sleep, without dream, the dawn arises of itself. This reality shines out once and for all, because that is its own nature.
Gaudapada uses a few plain words. Aja is unborn: a, not, and jan, to be born. Nidra is sleep, and svapna is dream. Prabhata is dawn, a shining forth. Dharma here means the real thing itself, what is so, from dhr, to hold. Svayam is by itself. Sakrt is once. The text says the dawn is free of three things. It has no birth, because nothing brings it into being. It has no sleep, which Shankara reads as not knowing the truth. It has no dream, which he reads as knowing it wrongly. So the dawn is neither missing nor mistaken. It arises of itself, with no cause behind it. It shines once, not in stages, because what is unborn cannot be assembled bit by bit. This is its nature, not a rule laid on it. The question behind the verse is how knowing the unborn comes about. Is it earned, made, or produced by a practice? Gaudapada answers that a produced thing would be born, and this is not. This also sits close to the Buddhist teaching of no-arising in Nagarjuna's circle, though Gaudapada speaks of one awareness, not of emptiness. The text asks the listener to stop treating this knowing as a product still to be manufactured, and to see it as already shining.
A room has its shutters closed at noon, and someone sits inside waiting for light. Opening the shutters makes no sun. The light was there all along. The closed shutters are the belief that this knowing must be made, and the open window is seeing that it was never absent.
1. Tomorrow on waking, before you touch your phone, lie still for one minute. Notice that you are already aware, and that you did nothing to bring that about. 2. Once at midday, when a worry starts spinning, pause for a minute. Notice that you are watching the worry, and that the watching is calm. 3. Tonight in bed, try to catch the exact moment sleep begins. Notice that you cannot, and that nothing you did made it happen.
A woman comes round in the recovery room after an operation. She has no memory of going under. The nurse says her name, and before she remembers the surgery, her age or her worries, she is simply aware, and aware that she is. Nobody lit that. Only then does the thought arrive: where am I, is it over, is the pain bad. The verse speaks to that moment. Waking does not need to be built, and it does not wait on the story of the day. Gaudapada teaches that the awareness she finds on opening her eyes is the unborn dawn, and that sleep and dream are what pass across it. Seeing this, she can let the first fear be only a thought that has arrived, not the ground she stands on. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: waking comes unasked, and sleep cannot be caught as it begins. The verse does not take away her pain, her grief or the need for the nurse and the doctor. It does not say recovery will be quick. It speaks only to what is present underneath them.
