Through clinging to any single view whatever, this Lord is veiled. Happiness is always covered; sorrow is always laid bare. It is. It is not. It is and is not. It is not and is not. Moving, still, both, or neither: by these four, the fool veils Him.

Three words carry it. Graha is grasping, from grah, to seize: holding a view the way a fist holds a stone. Avarana is veiling, from vri, to cover. Balisha is the childlike one, the fool, who has not yet seen what the grasping costs. Gaudapada says that clinging to any one view covers the Lord, the Self that is always present. The cost is stated plainly. Happiness stays covered, and sorrow stays uncovered. The mind that grips a position hears every reply as a threat, and peace slips out of reach. He then lists the four positions a mind can take on anything: it is, it is not, it is both, it is neither. The same four are applied to moving and still. Whichever one a person seizes, the seizing is the veil. The Buddhist thinkers of his day, Nagarjuna above all, used this same fourfold net, and the Karika shares the method. Shankara's reading, as the commentators give it, is that the Self is never reached by a view about it. The teaching is asked here because the earlier verses speak of the unborn waking of itself, and a reader may think the right doctrine will bring that about. Gaudapada answers that holding any doctrine tightly hides what it points to. What he asks of the listener is to loosen the grip.

A child cups a firefly in both hands to keep it, and squeezes harder each time it flickers. The light goes dim in the dark of the fist. The firefly is the Self, the fist is the held view, and the glow shows only when the hands open.

1. Today, find one argument you are in, with a person or only in your head, where you are sure you are right. 2. Write your position in one line. Under it write the opposite, and then "both" and "neither". 3. Sit quietly for two minutes with all four lines in front of you. Notice where your chest or jaw tightens when you read the one you reject. 4. Then put the paper down and notice what is left once you stop defending a side.

A woman stands in a hospital corridor, arguing with her brother over whether their father should have the operation. Her answer is yes, his is no. Each says it louder, and neither is hearing the other, or the old man down the hall. The teaching changes the moment step by step. First she notices that she is gripping a position, not looking at her father. Then she sees that the opposite position, and the mixture, and the shrug are all still positions, each easy to grab. Then she asks the doctor her real questions, because holding the answer loosely leaves room for them. The text teaches that the grip covers happiness and leaves sorrow plain to see. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a mind braced for a fight hears very little. The teaching does not decide the medical question, does not end the fear, and does not replace the surgeon's advice where a body needs it.
