These are the four corners, and by grasping at them the Lord is always veiled. The one who has seen him untouched by every one of them is the one who sees all.
Three words carry the verse. Koti is a corner or end-point: a position a thought can come to rest in. Graha is grasping, from the root grah, to seize. Bhagavan is the Lord, and for Gaudapada this means the Self, the one reality he has been pointing to throughout. The four corners are the four ways a mind can answer any question: it is, it is not, it both is and is not, it neither is nor is not. Verse 4.82 had already listed them. Gaudapada says the Self stays veiled for as long as the mind seizes any one of these. The corners do not shut the Self out. The gripping does. Then comes the turn: whoever has seen the Self untouched by all four is sarvadrk, the one who sees all. Nothing is left outside, because no position is left to stand in. The commentators read this as the end of all views, not as one more view among them. The same fourfold frame appears in the Buddhist thinkers of his time, Nagarjuna above all, who used it to loosen the grip of thought. Gaudapada uses it to point at what stays when the grip is gone. He teaches it here because the whole chapter has been taking apart the schools' arguments. A reader may ask what is left when every claim is put down. The answer is that the one who saw the claims is left.
A courtyard has four corners, and a man pressed into one of them can see only two walls. He argues that the courtyard is its corner. Another man stands in the open middle and sees all four walls and the sky. The corners are the four positions of thought, and the middle is the Self that holds none of them.
1. Today, when you catch yourself certain in a disagreement, stop for one minute before answering. 2. Say your position silently in one plain sentence, then say its opposite just as plainly. 3. Notice the small tightening in your jaw or chest that comes with holding the first one. 4. Let it loosen, and notice who is watching both sentences. 5. Then speak, or stay quiet.
A mother sits in a clinic corridor waiting for her daughter's biopsy result. Her mind swings between two sentences: it is nothing, and it is the worst. Each one feels like solid ground, and each costs her breath. The verse speaks to that swing. First she notices she is gripping a conclusion, not looking at a fact. The result is already what it is, and neither sentence changes it. Then she notices the one who watches both sentences rise and fall, and that watcher has not been harmed by either. From there she can do the next plain thing, which is to hold her daughter's hand, answer the nurse and wait. The text teaches that the Self is untouched by every position, and in that moment the lesson is practical: she need not take a side to stay steady. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point, that a clenched mind sees less than a loose one. The verse does not promise the result will be good, and it does not take away fear or grief. It is no substitute for the doctor's care.
