Meaning · English

Mother, victorious is your tongue, hibiscus-red, ceaselessly murmuring the long tale of your lord's virtues like a prayer repeated. Seated at its tip, Sarasvati's form, once pure as clear crystal, turns ruby-bodied.

The poet turns from the lips and the smile to the Goddess's tongue. Three words carry the picture. Guna means a quality or virtue; the verse speaks of a whole gana, a crowd of them, belonging to Shiva, her lord (pati, husband and master). Japa is quiet repetition, a murmured prayer said over and over. Japa-pushpa is the hibiscus, the red flower whose colour the tongue shares. So the poet says her tongue never rests. It tells Shiva's virtues again and again, as softly and steadily as someone counting a prayer, and it is as red as that flower. The second half adds a story told in colour. Sarasvati, goddess of speech, is described as sitting at the tongue's tip. Her form is clear white, like crystal. Yet she turns ruby, because she sits beside that red tongue and takes its colour, as clear crystal does beside a red flower. Speech itself, the poet says, takes on the Goddess's hue. This is why the verse stands among the praises of her face. The tongue is where her words live, and her words are praise of Shiva. The Goddess is shown as devoted to him, and even Sarasvati is tinted by her. Lakshmidhara's commentary is not needed to follow the image. The verse asks only that the listener see the crystal and the flower.

A clear glass bead lies on a red cloth, and soon the whole bead glows red, though the glass has not changed. Sarasvati is the clear glass, pure speech. The Goddess's red tongue is the cloth. Near her, even the purest speech takes her colour.
