Meaning · English
How shall I describe this wilderness-house, this place where every doubt has been settled? It is always level, never shaken. It is the nectar of knowing, one taste throughout. I am like the sky. Without a living thing or the lack of one, it shines always. Without a seed or the lack of one, it shines always. Without the bond or the freedom of nirvana, it shines always. It is the nectar of knowing, one taste throughout. I am like the sky. Free of coming into being, it shines always. Free of the round of birth and death, it shines always. Free of dissolution, it shines always. It is the nectar of knowing, one taste throughout. I am like the sky.
Three Sanskrit words carry this. Samarasa means one taste: sama is same, rasa is flavour, so a sameness with no pocket of difference inside it. Vibhati means to shine out, from bha, light; the self does not become visible once in a while, it shines satatam, always. Nirvana here is freedom, and the text puts it beside bondage as one more pair. The first stanza asks how he can describe this. He calls it a wilderness-house, a lonely forest dwelling where doubts are already settled, and says it is level and unshaken. Nothing in it can be pointed to, so speech falls short. The second stanza removes pairs. The self has no living thing and no lifeless thing, no seed and no seedless state, no bond and no release. Even liberation is something it does without. The third stanza removes the story of time. It has no arising, no round of worldly wandering, and no ending. What never began cannot end. Why say all this? The singer is answering the grief and doubt of the mind, which fears being born, bound and destroyed. He tells it that these happen only in the telling, and that what he is has none of them. The refrain keeps returning to the sky: wide, untouched, and holding every corner without belonging to one. The listener is asked to hear a description of what remains when each pair is set down, and to see that even the wish for freedom belongs to the pairs.
Think of a window pane in a house where seasons come and go: frost on it, then rain, then dust, then sunlight. The pane has all these on it at different times, but the glass was never made by the frost and is not ended by the sun. The self is the glass; birth, bondage and ending are the weather.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes by a window or door that opens on the sky. 2. Name three things that began today: a meal, a mood, a conversation. Watch each one start and fade. 3. Then notice what was aware of all three. Do not name it; just notice that it was there before each began and is still there now. 4. Stop when five minutes are up and go on with your evening.
A mother sits on the edge of her bed at night, scrolling through photographs of her daughter's first year, thinking that the child is now fourteen and nothing of that baby is left. She feels each stage ended and was lost. The verse's three stanzas speak to that moment. First, it sets aside the question of how to describe what stays, since the baby, the girl and the teenager are all described by things that changed. Second, it points past the pairs she is stuck between, loss and keeping. Third, it says the one who watches these stages was never born into any of them and does not end with them. She may notice that the awareness looking at the photographs is the same one that looked at the child then. Ordinary experience does confirm that our sense of being the same person persists while body, habits and opinions change completely. The verse does not promise that her longing will lift or that the years can be had back. It also does not replace talking to someone if the sadness stays heavy for weeks.
