Two Bad Reasons

Vaisheshika Sutras 3.1.16

Meaning · English

'It has horns, so it is a horse.' And 'It has horns, so it is a cow': this second one is the example of the inconclusive reason.

The question behind the sutra is simple: how can a reason fail? Kanada answers with two examples, both about horns. The first, 'it has horns, so it is a horse,' fails at the root. Shankara Mishra's commentary pictures someone pointing at a donkey and calling it a horse because it is horned. But the donkey has no horns, and no horse has them either. The reason is false of the animal, and it points away from the conclusion. The arguer was misled by noticing that hares, jackals and monkeys are neither horses nor horned. The second, 'it has horns, so it is a cow,' fails differently. Horns are real, but buffaloes and goats have them too. Kanada calls this anaikantika, 'not tied to one side.' The mark sits on both sides of the question, so it cannot choose between them. For the Vaisheshika, a reason (hetu) must truly be present in its subject and must go only where the conclusion goes. If it fails either test, it proves nothing.

1. Today, notice one moment when you draw a conclusion from a single sign, such as 'the room is quiet, so they're upset.' Write the sign down. 2. Check whether the sign is really there. Look again, or ask, rather than trusting your first impression. 3. Take two minutes to list other things the same sign could point to. Quiet could mean tired, busy or focused. 4. If the sign fits more than one answer, call your conclusion a guess. Hold it loosely until a sign turns up that fits only one answer.

Modern logic sees the same two faults. The horse case rests on a false premise, so the argument is unsound however tidy its form. The cow case resembles affirming the consequent: cows have horns, this has horns, therefore it is a cow. In probability terms, evidence that is just as likely under rival answers does not help you choose between them, and that is the anaikantika point exactly. Cognitive psychology finds that people readily accept such non-distinguishing signs, especially when the signs fit what they already expect. One difference matters. Indian inference does not judge arguments by their form alone. It asks whether a real connection holds between the sign and the conclusion, which comes close to modern talk of evidence and causation. What remains open, as Hume pressed about induction, is how anyone can be certain such a connection holds everywhere.
