Worldly knowing is held to be of two kinds: there is a real thing, and it is perceived; or there is no real thing, yet it is perceived, and this too is counted as worldly. Where there is no thing and no perceiving, that is called beyond the world. Knowledge, the known and the knowable are always declared in this way by the awakened.
Gaudapada sorts all knowing into levels. Laukika means belonging to the loka, the everyday world. Lokottara means uttara, beyond, the loka. Upalambha is perceiving, taking hold of something in the mind. First level: a real thing is there and you perceive it, like a cup on the table. Second level: no real thing is there, yet you perceive it, like a rope taken for a snake, or a dream. Gaudapada counts both as worldly, because in both the mind is busy with an object. Third level: no object and no perceiving. That he calls beyond the world. The last line says the awakened always speak of knowledge, the known and the knowable in this threefold way. The known is what the mind lands on. The knowable is all that could be known. Gaudapada places them all inside the first two levels. This sits in the fourth chapter because that chapter argues that nothing is ever born. If no thing truly arises, perceiving a thing is never the last word. The verse asks the listener to notice which level a given knowing belongs to. Shankara reads the third level as the end of seeing duality. Fairly noted, the Buddhist thinkers of his day also spoke of perception without a real object, and the commentators discuss how close the two schools stand.
On a hot road, a shimmer of water lies ahead. Walk up and it is only heat on tar. The shimmer was seen, but nothing was there. The verse sorts seeing this way: real water, a mirage, and a stillness where no road and no looker remain.
1. Tonight, pick one worry that has been following you today. 2. Write two lines: what has actually happened, and what you are adding in your mind. 3. Sit with the second line for two minutes and notice how real it feels while you are inside it. 4. Ask whether anyone else standing there would see it, and leave the answer unforced.
A shopkeeper's wife gets a text from her son in another city: we need to talk tonight. By afternoon she has pictured lost work, a quarrel, a sickness. She has stopped serving customers properly. The verse would slow her at one point. A message has arrived, and that is real. The trouble, the quarrel and the illness are perceived, but not present. Sorting the afternoon into these two piles, step by step, loosens the grip of the second. She can reply, ask a plain question, or wait for the evening call. The text itself says the third level, with no object and no perceiving, is beyond any such sorting, and it does not treat the first two as that. Ordinary experience confirms only the small part, that a worry imagined in detail feels as heavy as a fact. The teaching does not promise the son's news will be good, and it does not take away real grief or real illness when they come. It does not replace a doctor, a lawyer or a talk with family where one is needed.
