When the three kinds of what is to be known are understood one after another, by oneself, then the wise one of great mind has knowledge of everything, everywhere. What is to be abandoned, what is to be known, what is to be reached, and what is to be set aside: these are to be understood by the foremost path. Apart from what is to be fully known, apprehension is remembered as belonging to the three.
Gaudapada gives a short list of four tasks. Heya is what is to be given up, from hri, to leave behind. Jneya is what is to be known. Apya is what is to be reached, from ap, to obtain. Apakya is what is to be set aside, put out of mind rather than fought. He says a wise person sorts everything they meet into these, and the sorting is done by understanding, not by force. The first line says the three objects of knowledge must be learned in order and by oneself. Then sarvajnata, knowing everything, comes. The text means by this a settled grasp of what matters, not a heap of facts. The last line adds that ordinary apprehension, upalambha, the taking hold of things as present, belongs only to the three. It does not belong to the one thing that is truly to be fully known, vijneya, which sits apart. The question behind it: if the world has never really been born, as this chapter keeps saying, what is left to do? Gaudapada answers that the work is clear sorting, and it shrinks as it goes. The words of knowing, abandoning and attaining were shared with the Buddhist teachers of his day, and the commentators read them in an Advaita way. The listener is asked to learn the order and not rush it.
Someone clearing a garage before a move makes four piles: the rubbish to throw out, the manuals to read, the one tool actually needed, and the boxes to leave shut. The verse sorts a mind the same way. Each thing it meets belongs in one pile, and the sorting itself leaves the room clearer.
1. Tonight, take five minutes with a pen and paper and write down what is on your mind. 2. Beside each item, mark one letter: G for give up, L for learn more about, R for reach for, S for set aside. 3. Do not act on any of it yet. Notice how many items only feel urgent and turn out to be S. 4. Repeat once more this week and see which items moved.
A man is packing his rented flat at ten at night, with a week left before he moves. Boxes are half full, drawers are open, and everything seems to need deciding at once. He is tired, and every object feels equally heavy. The verse would change this in steps. First he stops treating the pile as one problem and sorts it into four. Some things are to be thrown out, and he lets them go without a long argument. One or two things need learning, such as a deposit rule or a transfer form, so he reads them once. A few things are worth carrying to the new place. The rest, old resentments about the landlord for instance, he sets aside unopened. By midnight the room is the same size, but the list in his head is shorter. Ordinary experience confirms that a named, sorted list weighs less than a vague crowd of worries. The verse does not promise that the move goes smoothly, that the deposit comes back, or that the sorting ends all knowing. It describes a way of looking and does not replace a lawyer, a doctor, or a friend's help.
