Quiet Mind and Joy
Prashna Upanishad 4.6
Meaning · English
But when this inner light overwhelms the mind, dreams vanish. In that state, this happiness arises in the body.
There are different levels of sleep. Usually, the mind stays active, creating dreams from old memories and experiences. However, when the light (tejas), traditionally linked with udāna, takes over, the dreaming mind falls silent. This is deep sleep (suṣupti): no dreams are seen, and happiness arises in the body. This joy is not a thought or a dream, but a state of being that settles into the body.
A lake during a storm is choppy and reflects fragmented images of the shore. When the wind stops completely, the surface becomes a perfect, still mirror. The choppy water represents the dreaming mind, while the sudden, smooth stillness is the light that brings peace to the body.
