The Witnessing Presence
Prashna Upanishad 4.9
Meaning · English
This person is the one who sees, touches, hears, smells, tastes, thinks, understands, and acts: the person whose self is understanding. He rests in the supreme, imperishable Self.
The body has tools for sensing, but there is a deeper knower behind them. This is the real person. While the eyes see and the ears hear, this knowing self is the one who actually sees and hears, thinks and acts. It is the self made of understanding, the doer as well as the knower. In deep sleep this person comes to rest in the higher, imperishable Self, as birds roost in a tree.
A movie screen stays white and still while colorful characters run and fight across it. The characters are the thoughts and sensations of the body, but the screen is the witness. The screen is what allows the movie to be seen without being changed by the plot.
