When a sleeper desires nothing and sees no dream, that is deep sleep. In that state he has become one, a single mass of knowing, full of joy, tasting joy, with thought as his doorway. This knower is the third quarter.

The Mandukya Upanishad is describing the self in four quarters. This is the third, deep sleep. Its test is plain: no desire, no dream. Four words carry the rest. Ekibhuta means become one: the many things of waking and dreaming fold into a single state. Prajnana-ghana joins prajnana, knowing, with ghana, a dense lump, so the sleeper is knowing without parts, not knowing this or that. Ananda-maya means made of joy, ananda being joy and maya a suffix of fullness. Cetomukha means having cetas, thought or awareness, as its mouth: awareness is the only doorway through which this state is entered and enjoyed. The knower of this state is called prajna. The Upanishad's reason is a method. It walks through the states every person passes through each day, so that the listener can find what remains the same in all of them. Deep sleep matters because wanting has stopped, and what is left is felt as joy. Shankara reads this joy as the calm of having no object to chase, not a prize gained. He also holds that this is still not the final Self, because in sleep the seed of ignorance remains and wakes again with the sleeper.

A porter reaches home at dusk and sets down the load he has carried since morning. He has gained nothing, yet his whole body sighs with ease. Deep sleep is that ease: the joy comes from carrying no wants, not from receiving anything.

1. Tonight, with the light off, spend one minute running through tomorrow's wants and worries. Then tell yourself they can wait until morning. 2. In the morning, before reaching for your phone, stay still for the first few seconds. Notice how the day's list has not yet arrived. 3. Once this week, when you wake after a good night, ask what you were wanting while you slept. Notice that the answer is nothing.

A mother sits by her toddler's bed after a long day. Since morning the child wanted the red cup, then not the red cup, then her phone, then to be carried. Now the small face has gone slack and the fists have opened. Nothing is being asked for. She watches and sees how complete the stillness looks. This is the scene the verse points to. The text says that when desire and dream both drop away, what remains is a settled, undivided state it calls joy. Ordinary experience agrees with a part of this: after a deep, dreamless stretch of sleep a person wakes lighter, and after poor sleep the same person is short-tempered and craves more of everything. The Upanishad's claim is larger than rest. It calls the sleeper a mass of knowing, the prajna, with awareness as its doorway. That is the text's teaching about what sleep reveals, and it asks only that the reader look at their own nights. It does not promise that waking wants will stay quiet, or that sleep cures grief or illness. A person who cannot sleep for weeks should see a doctor.
