Not knowing inward, not knowing outward, not knowing both, not a mass of knowing, not knowing, not unknowing. Unseen, beyond dealings, ungraspable, without mark, unthinkable, unnameable. Its essence is the sure sense of one Self. The world's spread ceases in it. Calm, kind, without a second: this is the fourth. This is the Self, and this is to be known.

The verse describes the fourth state of the Self mostly by saying what it is not. The first six denials close off every kind of awareness the reader knows: turned inward as in dream, turned outward as in waking, both at once, gathered and dull as in deep sleep, plain knowing, and plain blankness. Then come the things it is not: seen, handled, grasped, marked, thought, named. Three words carry the rest. Prapancha is the spreading out of the world into many things and names; upashama is its settling down. Shiva here means kind, benign, not a god's name. Advaita means no second: nothing stands beside the Self as something else. Pratyaya is a settled certainty, and the verse says the Self's only proof is the sure sense of itself as one. The teacher speaks this way because any positive description would turn the Self into one more object among objects, and it is the one who knows all objects. Shankara reads the denials as pointing, not as describing an emptiness: they remove what is added on, and what remains is the witness. The verse closes by asking that this Self be known, directly, not argued about.

Think of a cinema screen after the film ends and the lights come up. The chases, the storms, the faces were all light moving across it, and none of it stuck. The screen was there the whole time, plain and unmarked. The fourth is like that: what stays when every scene has gone.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep with the lights low and the phone away. 2. Notice one thought, one sound, one body feeling. Say quietly to yourself, this is seen, so I am not it. 3. Do this with each as it comes, without chasing any. 4. Notice the small gap after a thought ends and before the next begins. Rest there for a few breaths, then stop.

A woman sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while her father is in surgery. Her mind runs through the worst outcomes, then the best, then replays an argument from last year. Each thought feels like her. The verse would first have her notice that each one arrives and leaves, and that something is aware of them all. Then she might see that the dread is something seen, not the seer. Her breathing slows a little. She can sit with the waiting without being carried off by every picture. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: a worry watched for a minute often loosens, and a mind under strain grips harder when it is fed more. The Mandukya's claim goes further. It says a Self remains when thinking, sensing and even sleep are set aside, and that this is to be known directly. That is the text's teaching, given as such. It does not promise the surgery will go well, remove her fear, or stand in for the surgeon and the nurses doing their work.
