Meaning · English

May your two breasts, drunk from together by Skanda and the elephant-faced one, their tips streaming with milk, always take our sorrow away. Seeing them, Heramba's heart is shaken with doubt, and he quickly feels his own temple-domes with his hand, and makes us smile.

Three words carry the verse. Khedam is sorrow or weariness, from khid, to be pressed down. Prasnuta means flowing, and here it is the milk streaming from the Mother. Kumbha means a pot, and it is also the name for the two rounded swellings on an elephant's forehead. Heramba is a name of Ganesha. The poet first makes a wish: may her breasts, nursed by both her sons, Skanda and the elephant-headed Ganesha, always remove our sorrow. The body is praised as the Mother's, the source of nourishment. Then comes the small scene. Ganesha looks at the breasts and his heart is uneasy. They are round like the domes on his own head, so he quickly reaches up to feel his forehead, as if to check it is still there. His doubt makes the onlooker smile. The scene is told with affection. It shows how near the children are to her. It also shows that the one who feeds the whole world is a mother first. The poet's wish rests on that. He asks for sorrow to be lifted by the same milk her sons drink. The commentators read the humour as part of the praise and not as a joke at anyone's cost. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to smile with the poet and see her as Mother.

A small boy watches his sister being fed from a bowl, then pats his own bowl in sudden worry, to be sure it is still full. Ganesha does the same with his forehead, caught between wonder at the Mother's breasts and a child's fear of being left out.
