No flicker of doubt stirs in our mind, banner of the mountain-lord, that these two breasts of yours are cups of nectar and ruby. Drinking from them, the two boys, the elephant-faced one and the splitter of Krauncha, still know nothing of a wife's company.

The poet argues from evidence. He says he has no doubt that the Mother's breasts hold nectar, and he names the proof: her two sons, who drink from them. Key words. Amrita is nectar, literally 'not dying'. Kumara means a boy or youth, and it is the name of both sons. Sandeha is doubt, a 'pointing two ways'. Spanda is a throb or flicker, so 'no flicker of doubt' means not even a tremor. Nagapati-pataka, 'banner of the lord of mountains', calls Parvati the flag of her father Himalaya, his glory held high. The clauses in order. The breasts are called vessels of nectar and ruby, precious and full. The poet says his mind has no doubt about this. The reason is that the two sons, Ganesha the elephant-faced and Skanda who split the Krauncha mountain, drink from them. Both are mighty, yet the hymn says they still know nothing of the pleasures of a wife. The nectar keeps them boys. Lakshmidhara and the other commentators read this as the poet's wit: the sons are the living proof. Why it is taught here: the poet has just praised the milk as the source of poets' speech and asks how anyone can know it is nectar. His answer is that her sons are the sign. The verse asks only that the listener see the Mother's breasts as the source of nourishment.

A village well stands at the edge of a field. Nobody tests its water, because the children who drink from it grow up strong, year after year. The poet argues the same way: the sons at her breast show what the cups hold.
