Meaning · English

Mother, you wear a spotless necklace, a slender creeper of pearls drawn from the elephant, the demon-born and other sources. Tinged within by the red of your lips, it lies on your breasts like the fame of Shiva, destroyer of the three cities, mingled with his fiery valor.

Three words carry the picture. Amala means spotless, without stain. Kirti means fame, from a root that means to proclaim, so fame is what gets called out about a person. Pratapa means blazing power, the heat of a deed done. The poet looks at the necklace the Goddess wears and sees Shiva's renown in it. He says the string is made of pearls, and the commentators name the sources the old tales give for such pearls, among them the elephant and the demon-born. The string is slender like a creeper and has no flaw. Fame is traditionally white and clean, so white pearls suit it. Then the colour changes. The red of her lips falls on the pearls from within and tints them. The poet reads that red as Shiva's pratapa, the fire of his valor, mixed into his fame. Shiva is called here the one who subdued the three cities, the deed his glory rests on. The necklace rests on her breasts, which the hymn praises as the Mother's. The poet teaches that his glory is not kept apart from her. It is worn by her and lies near her heart, and her own colour touches it. Some commentators hold the picture is a comparison, not a claim that the pearls are his fame. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows how the poet sees her adornment.

Think of a string of white jasmine laid against a red silk cloth. The flowers stay white, yet the cloth's colour glows up into them and they look faintly flushed. The pearls are Shiva's pure fame, and the red is the warmth of the Goddess that colours it.
