I am neither stained nor spotless, neither within nor without. No inner division shows itself to me. I am the stillness of my own nature, free of all sickness. No state of not-knowing has been born in me, and no state of knowing either. How can I speak of a knowing beyond knowing? I am the stillness of my own nature, free of all sickness. I am not joined to right action or to wrong, not joined to bondage or to freedom. Joined and unjoined do not appear to me. I am the stillness of my own nature, free of all sickness. No higher and lower is ever mine, no standing in the middle, no enemy and no friend. How can I speak of what helps and what harms? I am the stillness of my own nature, free of all sickness.
Three Sanskrit words carry the song. Svarupa is one's own form, from sva, own, and rupa, shape: what remains when every added label is taken off. Nirvana is a blowing out, as of a flame that has no more fuel. Anamaya means without amaya, without ailment, a self that nothing has made ill. The four stanzas strip away four pairs. First, stained and spotless, inside and outside: Dattatreya says he finds no inner split in himself. Second, ignorance and knowledge. He says neither was born in him, and then asks how anyone could describe a knowing that is past both. Third, right and wrong action, bondage and freedom, being joined or unjoined. None of these labels sticks. Fourth, high and low, the middle road, friend and enemy, benefit and harm. He cannot sort himself or others by them. Why teach it? A seeker asks how to be pure, wise and free. The avadhuta answers that these are all measuring words, and the self was never on the scale. Even "knowledge" is a thing that comes and goes. After each denial the refrain returns, steady, so that the reader hears what is left when the pairs fall away. The text asks the listener to stop treating the self as a project to be cleaned, improved or rescued.
A mirror hangs in a room. A muddy boot passes in front of it, then a white shirt, then a friend, then a stranger. Each shows clearly, and the glass is no dirtier or cleaner afterwards. The self, in this teaching, is the glass. Every pair of opposites is only what passes before it.
1. Tonight, for five minutes, sit with a pen and paper and write down the labels you gave yourself today: good, lazy, wise, wronged, behind. 2. Next to each, write whether it was true an hour ago and whether it will be true next week. 3. Read the list slowly, as a list of things that passed in front of you. 4. Cross out nothing. Just notice the one who is reading.
At a cousin's wedding feast, an aunt is cornered by two relatives who have not spoken in years. Each wants her to agree that the other was wrong. She feels the pull to be one side's friend and the other's enemy, and her pulse is up. The teaching would change the moment in small steps. She first notices that "friend" and "enemy" are roles being offered to her, not facts about her. Then she notices that the pull to take a role is itself something passing through. She can breathe out and let her shoulders drop. Then she can answer from what she actually knows, perhaps that she loves them both and will not rule on the old quarrel today. Ordinary experience agrees that a person who is not scrambling to defend a position often speaks more clearly. The text calls the self free of all such sorting. That is its teaching, not something the aunt has to prove to herself in the moment. The limit is plain. It does not end the quarrel or heal the old wound between the two cousins. If someone is in real danger or being harmed, it does not excuse standing by, and it is no substitute for help from a counsellor or doctor.
