Awake From the Beginning
Gaudapada Karika 4.92
Meaning · English
All things are awake from the beginning, by their own nature, and fully settled. For the one in whom this patient acceptance arises, it makes ready the way to deathlessness.
Three words carry this. Adibuddha is made of adi, the beginning, and buddha, awakened, from budh, to wake. Dharmas are the things that appear, from dhr, to hold: every thing and state the mind can name. Kshanti is patience, the steady staying with an understanding until it settles. Amritatva is deathlessness, from a-mrita, not dead. Gaudapada says every thing is already awake by its own nature, and is firmly fixed that way. Nothing waits to be made awake, and nothing was ever outside it. Whoever holds this with patience is, in his words, fit for deathlessness. He does not say it is handed over. He says the person becomes ready for it. He teaches it here because the verses before have shown that all things are like space, with no real manyness in them. If so, there is nothing to produce and nothing to repair. Only the grasping view needs to settle. Shankara reads the teaching as the knowledge of the one unborn self, which the world's names and forms do not touch. The phrase and the word dharma are also the vocabulary of the Buddhist thinkers of his day, such as Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu. Gaudapada uses them for his own claim, and the schools differ on what that claim finally rests on. The listener is asked for patience, not effort: to stay with this view until it stops feeling strange.
A curtain is drawn across a bedroom window, and the room looks dim. The sun outside was never lit by anyone and never switched on. The dimness comes from the cloth. Wakefulness is the morning light, already there. The busy, grasping mind is the curtain.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for five minutes with the lights low. Notice that you are aware without having to do anything to be aware. 2. Tomorrow, when you catch yourself thinking you must fix or improve yourself, stop for one breath. Say quietly, "Nothing has to be made." 3. For one week, when a worry rises, wait to see how long it takes to pass before you answer it. Note the time.
It is four in the morning and a man in his forties sits on the edge of his bed. His mind has been drafting plans all night for repairing his work, his health and his temper. Each plan assumes that he is unfinished and must be built into someone acceptable. The text teaches the reverse: awareness is not manufactured, and nothing needs to be added to it. Taken that way, the first step is small. He notices that the plans are thoughts moving through, and that the one noticing them is not itself a plan. The second step is kshanti, patience: he does not argue with each thought or chase it. He lets the hour be an hour. The third is to leave the fixing until daylight, when he can look at a real list. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: decisions made at that hour are usually harsher than the ones made after rest. The verse does not promise sleep, and it does not remove the work, the worry or the illness behind them. If sleeplessness goes on for weeks, a doctor should be asked.
