Meaning · English

All things are quiet from the first, unborn, and at rest by their own nature. All things are undivided, the same throughout. The unborn sameness is clear-sighted and without fear. But for those who always move about in difference there is no fearlessness. Sunk low in difference, they argue each for a separate view. For this reason they are called pitiable.

Gaudapada takes a few words one at a time. Dharma is a thing, whatever holds its own nature, from dhr, to hold. Aja is unborn: a, not, and jan, to be born. Samya is sameness, the quality of being level, with no higher or lower. Visharada is fearless, sure-footed, clear of doubt. Kripana is pitiable, from a root for pinched and narrow. Now the clauses. Gaudapada says everything is quiet from the start, never born, and at rest by its own nature, so nothing needs to be calmed or made. Everything is undivided and the same. That unborn sameness gives a steady, fearless footing. Those who live in difference lack it. Sunk in difference, they each defend a separate view, and Gaudapada calls them pitiable. He does not scorn them. He sees how narrow their ground is. It is taught here because the chapter has been answering the schools that quarrel over cause and effect. This is the reason he gives for why the quarrel never ends: it rests on difference. The language of things that are not born echoes Nagarjuna and the Buddhist thinkers of his day, though Gaudapada uses it for his own end. Shankara reads these verses as pointing to the one undivided self. Gaudapada asks the listener to look at the sameness underneath the sides.

Children chalk squares across a shared courtyard and fight over whose square is whose. They defend every line with loud certainty. The floor under all the squares is one slab. The lines are the differences the arguers defend, and the slab is the sameness that Gaudapada says was never divided.

1. Today, when you catch yourself defending a view in a conversation, pause for three breaths before you answer. 2. In those breaths, notice where your body tightens, and what you fear losing. 3. Then name one thing you and the other person plainly share, such as tiredness, a wish for a good evening, or love for the same child. 4. Speak again from that shared ground, and notice whether the voice softens.

A sister sits at the table where her brothers are dividing their late father's house. Voices rise. She feels her jaw set and her chest tighten, and she is already composing her side. The verse changes that moment step by step. First she notices the tightening and sees that fear of losing something is driving it. Then she sees that each brother is gripped by the same fear and the same grief. The text calls the unborn sameness fearless, and calls those who live only in difference pitiable. She hears the quarrel as that pity, not as an enemy's attack. Her words slow, and she can ask what each person needs. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: feeling threatened narrows attention and makes people defend instead of listen. The verse does not promise that the house will be divided fairly, that the grief will lift, or that she should give way on what is hers. Where money or law is involved, a lawyer or a trusted mediator still has work to do.
