The Quiet Few

Gaudapada Karika 4.95

Meaning · English

Those who become firmly settled in the unborn sameness, whoever they may be, are the greatly wise in the world. Yet the world does not take hold of that knowledge.

Three words carry the verse. Aja means unborn, from a, not, and jan, to be born. Samya means sameness, evenness, from sama, level. Mahajnana means great knowing, maha being great and jnana knowing. Gaudapada says that whoever becomes firmly settled in the unborn sameness is truly wise. The sameness is the one he has been describing: nothing is ever born, so nothing is really higher or lower than anything else. The second half says the world does not grasp this teaching. The word used is gahate, to plunge into or take hold of. People hear about it but do not dive in. Gaudapada says this here because the verses before it praise this knowing and scold those who cling to difference. A listener may fairly ask why so few are called wise, if the teaching is so plain. His reply is that the knowing is plain, but the habit of seeing difference runs deep, and few stay with the other view long enough to settle in it. Shankara, in his commentary, reads this as praise of those firm in non-duality. The verse asks the listener to be among the settled, and not only the hearers. It does not ask for a crowd's approval, because the text expects none.

A few people stand quietly on a dock at dawn, watching the sea go still, while a busy market roars behind them. The market does not turn. The still sea is the unborn sameness. The few at the edge are the settled, and the noise is the world that does not take hold of it.

1. Choose one ordinary hour today, such as a walk or washing up, and spend it without ranking anyone you meet as above or below you. 2. When a ranking arises, name it silently, "a ranking," and let the person stay level with you. 3. Do not mention this to anyone. At night, note in one line whether the hour felt different.

A grandmother sits at the back of a crowded wedding hall. Everyone around her is sorting guests by who is rich, who is related, who matters. She notices she has been doing it too. Then she watches a child serve water to a stranger and a cousin alike, with no sorting at all. The verse would change that moment in small steps. She sees the sorting as a habit. She sets it down for a minute. She looks at each face as equal. The text teaches that this evenness is great wisdom, and that most people pass it by. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind busy ranking people is rarely at ease. The verse does not promise that the hall will change, that others will notice, or that grief and quarrels will vanish. It also does not claim that settling in this sameness is quick. The text itself says few take hold of it.
