What was taken up earlier, the ignorance painted over with qualities and actions, is not told apart from the self, dear Uddhava. It falls away through seeing alone. The self is neither grasped nor let go. As sunrise removes the darkness from people's eyes but makes nothing new, so a keen and steady look at me removes the darkness in a person's mind.
Three words carry this. Ajnana is not knowing, from a, not, and jnana, knowing. Here it is a wrong picture laid over the self, coloured by guna (qualities) and karma (actions). Aviveka is failing to tell apart, from vi-vic, to separate. The self and the painted picture get mixed. Samiksha is looking all the way around a thing, from sam, fully, and iksh, to see. Krishna tells Uddhava that the wrong picture was picked up earlier and sits unsorted on the self. It leaves by seeing alone. The self is never taken hold of, because it was never missing, and never dropped, because it cannot be dropped. Then comes the sunrise. Light does not build a new world for people's eyes. It takes away the dark that hid what was already there. In the same way, Krishna says, a sharp and steady look at him destroys the dark in a person's buddhi, the mind that judges. This is taught here to answer a worry: if the self is already free, what is there to do? Krishna's answer is that no new thing is made. He asks Uddhava to look until the covering has nothing left to stand on. The commentators read the sunrise as removing only the darkness, never adding anything.
At night a shape on the bedroom chair looks like a crouching person. Nobody moves it and nothing is added. Morning light comes through the curtain and the shape is a heap of clothes. The fear was only a failure to see clearly, as the text takes ignorance to be.
1. Tonight, pick one hard thought about yourself, such as "I am useless at this." 2. Sit for five minutes and write down what actually happened, in plain facts, apart from the verdict you drew from it. 3. Look at the verdict beside the facts. Notice what is only added on. 4. Look at the one who is noticing. Do nothing to fix it. Just look.
A man is passed over for promotion. On the bus home his mind runs on: "I am a failure, I was always going to end up here." The feeling is as heavy as a stone, and he takes it for a fact about himself. The verse asks for a different move. First, he separates what happened from what was added: a decision was made, and a verdict was laid on top of it. Second, he sees that the verdict was built from qualities and actions, from what he did and how he was rated. Third, he turns to the one who is aware of all of it, which the text holds to be untouched by the rating. Nothing has to be seized or thrown away. The seeing is the whole work. Ordinary experience confirms a small part of this: a worry looked at plainly often loosens its grip, while one kept at the edge of the mind tends to grow. The verse does not promise that the disappointment goes, that the money worry ends, or that low mood needing a doctor will clear by looking. It speaks of the covering on the self, not of what happened that day.
