He shines by his own light. He is unborn, beyond measure, the great knowing and the knowing within every knower. He is one, without a second. Where words fall silent, he is there. By him prompted, speech and the breaths move. This much is the self's bewilderment: imagining difference in the one alone. Apart from the Self, nothing gives the self a place to stand.
Three words carry the verse. Svayamjyotih means self-luminous: a lamp needs no second lamp to be seen, and Krishna says the Self is like that. Everything else is known by its light, and it is not lit by anything else. Vikalpa means imagining apart, from kalpa, to fashion. It is the mind cutting up what is whole into this and that, mine and other. Sammoha means bewilderment, a total confusion about who one is. Krishna tells Uddhava what the Self is: unborn, not measurable by any yardstick, the awareness behind every experience. It is one, with no second. It is found where words stop, yet it is what moves speech and the breath. Then he names the single error. All the confusion comes to one thing: seeing difference where there is only the one. The last line closes the door on a hidden alternative. Apart from the Self, no other ground exists on which the small self could rest. This answers a question the earlier verses raise. If waking removes the dream, what is left after waking? Krishna says it is this one light, and the only mistake was ever the dividing. He asks Uddhava to understand the matter clearly. The commentators read the verse as a summing-up of the highest truth.
A sheet of paper is cut into paper dolls, and each doll seems to have its own shape, its own face, its own edges. Hold the strip up to the window and every one is the same sheet, joined at the hands. The Self is the sheet, and the cutting is the imagined difference.
1. Tonight, pick one person you feel set against, even mildly. 2. Sit for two minutes and notice the moment your mind draws a line between you and them. Notice only the drawing of the line. 3. Say quietly: "the same awareness looks out of both of us." Watch whether the line softens or stays. Either answer is fine. 4. Then go on with your evening as usual.
Two brothers stand in their late father's house after the funeral, arguing over who gets the front room and who keeps the clock. Each voice has gone sharp. Each has quietly started a list of old wrongs. The verse, as Krishna teaches it, would first ask what is happening in that tightening. The mind is sorting people into sides: my share, your share, my hurt, your hurt. Krishna calls this imagined division the one bewilderment. Held up against it, the brothers are two people grieving the same man in the same rooms. The sharpness may ease for a moment, enough for one of them to say a gentler sentence. The clock can still be discussed, but from beside each other and not across a line. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: when people feel threatened they divide quickly into us and them, and when they feel safe the line fades. The verse does not settle who inherits what, and it does not remove the grief. A lawyer or a mediator may still be needed. It speaks to the sorting, not to the paperwork.
