Prashna Upanishad 5.4

Meaning · English

If a person focuses on two sound-elements, they become one with the mind and are led up by the Yajus verses to the intermediate space, to the lunar realm. After experiencing grandeur there, they eventually return.

Focusing on two parts of the sacred syllable unites the meditator with the mind, and the Yajus verses lift the consciousness beyond the earthly plane to a higher atmospheric region. This state is linked to the moon. While this provides a sense of expansion and power, it is a temporary stay. Because the traveler has not reached the final destination, they eventually return again to this world.

A hiker who climbs halfway up a mountain to a beautiful scenic overlook. They enjoy the wide view and the fresh air for a while, but because they did not reach the summit, they eventually have to walk back down the trail to where they started.
