Breath Given to Breath

Bhagavad Gita 4.29

Meaning · English

Others offer the incoming breath into the outgoing, and the outgoing into the incoming. They hold back the movement of both, and devote themselves wholly to the control of breath.

Krishna names a sacrifice made with breath. Prana is the breath going out. Apana is the breath coming in. Ayama means control or stretching out, so pranayama is the disciplined holding and guiding of breath. Parayana means wholly devoted, resting entirely on one thing. Krishna says some practitioners pour the in-breath into the out-breath, and the out-breath into the in-breath. Then they check the movement of both, so that for a time neither flows, and they give themselves fully to this training. The word juhvati, offer, is the same word used for pouring into a sacred fire. Breath itself becomes the offering. Krishna gives the reason across these verses: people come to the same goal by different means, and each means is a sacrifice, an act given up to something higher than the self. Breath is always with us and tied closely to the restless mind, so it can serve as an offering. The verse asks the listener to see that this discipline belongs among the others. Commentators read it differently. Shankara takes it as a literal practice of breath control that steadies the mind for knowledge. Ramanuja reads such practices as aids to focusing on the self. Madhva reads them as worship offered to the Lord.

Picture a swimmer at the pool wall, drawing air in, then letting it out, then resting a moment with lungs still before pushing off. The breath is no longer a background habit but something she handles with care. That is the verse: ordinary breathing, taken in hand and given a purpose.

1. Sit upright in a chair for three minutes, once today, somewhere quiet. 2. Breathe normally and only notice: the cool air in, the warmer air out, and the small pause between them. 3. Then lengthen the out-breath slightly, without strain, for ten breaths. Never hold your breath to discomfort. 4. Stop if you feel dizzy or tense, and return to ordinary breathing. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should ask a doctor before trying anything beyond this.

A bus driver sits at the terminus after a hard run, hands still tight on the wheel, jaw clenched, breath shallow and quick. Krishna's teaching would have him treat that breath as something to give attention to rather than ignore. He would first notice it, in and out. Then he would slow the out-breath a little and let a gentle pause come before the next in-breath. A few minutes of that, and the grip on the wheel usually loosens. Ordinary experience confirms that slow, even breathing tends to settle a racing body, and doctors commonly suggest it for stress and for easing tension. Gentle breathing practice is generally safe for healthy people. Forceful breath-holding is another matter: it can cause dizziness or fainting, and people with heart, lung or blood pressure problems should see a doctor first. The older terms prana and apana have no exact modern match, since they describe vital movements as the tradition understood them, not simply air in the lungs. The verse does not promise that breath practice will remove the driver's exhaustion, repair his circumstances or replace medical care. It offers a small, steady place to stand while the hard day settles.
