I am no fool, and no scholar. Silence is not mine, nor its opposite, at any time. So how can I speak of argument and counter-argument? I am the self in its own peace, free of all affliction. Father, mother, family, caste: none are mine. Birth and the rest, and death, are never mine. So how can I speak of fondness and of delusion? I am the self in its own peace, free of all affliction. I have never set, and I am not forever rising. Brightness and dimness are never mine. So how can I speak of the twilight rites and the duties that follow? I am the self in its own peace, free of all affliction.

The avadhuta Dattatreya sings three short answers to a friend, and each ends on the same refrain. Two words carry it. Svarupa means one's own form: sva, own, and rupa, shape. Nirvana is a blowing out, from nir and va, to blow. It is the flame of restlessness going out, not the person. Anamaya means without ama, without affliction or sickness. Together they say: I am the self resting in its own form, untroubled. The first stanza sets aside the fool and the scholar, silence and talk, argument and counter-argument. Each is something a mind does or is called. The second sets aside the facts of a life as others record it: parents, family line, caste, birth, death. Fondness and delusion go with them, since both need someone to cling to. The third says the self neither sets nor keeps rising. Light and dimness are not its states. So the evening rites, which mark the sun's going down, have nothing to attach to. The reason he gives is in each question: how can I speak of these? He is not rejecting them in anger. He is saying that when he looks for himself, none of these labels is found there. The teaching asks the listener to notice how many of their own descriptions are borrowed from family, schooling, mood and the hour of the day.

At a wedding, everyone wears a sticker: Bride's Cousin, Groom's Colleague, Table Nine. At night the stickers peel off and go in the bin. The person who wore them is the same one who walked in. The labels stand for father, scholar, caste, and sunset duty. The self is the one underneath.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a pen and paper. List every label you answered to today: daughter, driver, the late one, the clever one. 2. Beside each, write who gave it to you and when. 3. Read the list slowly once. Notice what in you is quietly reading it. 4. Put the paper away without deciding anything.

A retired schoolteacher stands at her farewell party. People call her Madam one last time, and clap. She smiles, then feels a drop in her stomach: if she is not the teacher, who is she on Monday? The avadhuta's song offers her a different way to hear the clapping. Madam is a name given by a school, a timetable and a generation of children. Daughter, widow, neighbour and early riser are names given by other rooms. The text teaches that the one who answers to all of them has none of them as a birth-mark. She can receive the thanks fully, and still let the title stay on the stage when she goes home. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: people who lose a job or a role often feel they have lost themselves, because the role was doing so much of the naming. The song does not remove the empty mornings, or the grief of leaving work she loved. If the heaviness stays for weeks, she should see a doctor, as she would for any other lasting ailment.
