Know me as free of doubt and free of agitation. Know me as doubtless, without a break. Know me as stainless: I am the self resting in its own nature, and I am well. All meditations are given up, and action, good and bad, is given up. Friend, the steady ones drink the nectar of letting go: the self resting in its own nature, and I am well. Where the rules of verse are looked for, they are not found, no, not found. Sunk in one taste, made pure by long contemplation, the supreme avadhuta pours out the truth.
The avadhuta, Dattatreya, keeps singing of himself as the free self, and in this stretch he adds something startling. He says the steady ones give up even meditation, and give up good and bad action alike. Four words carry it. Tyaga is renunciation, from a root meaning to leave behind. Here it is called nectar, so leaving is something sweet that is drunk, not a loss that is endured. Dhira, the steady one, is the person who stays firm without being shaken. Svarupa-nirvana is the self's own nature gone quiet: svarupa is one's own form, nirvana is a flame blown out, the restlessness ended. Samarasa is same-taste, sama meaning equal and rasa meaning flavour or juice. Everything tastes of one thing to him. So the clauses read plainly. He is without doubt and without agitation, and he is untouched. Meditations and deeds, even the good ones, are things the steady let fall, because he is already what they were reaching toward. The last lines say his song has no measure to be found in it, no rule of metre. A man sunk in one taste does not stop to count syllables. He simply speaks what is so. The question underneath is what remains for someone who no longer needs a method. The avadhuta answers that what remains is the self, resting.
A house stands finished behind a frame of bamboo scaffolding. The painters have gone, and workers take the poles down one by one. The house was never made of the poles. The practices, good and bad deeds are the scaffolding, and the self is the house that was standing underneath all along.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with nothing to do. No phone, no prayer, no plan. 2. Notice the small pull to fix, improve or finish something. Name it quietly, and do not obey it yet. 3. Notice what is left when the pull passes: the plain fact of sitting, breathing, being here. 4. Afterwards, write one line on whether it felt like loss or like putting down a bag.
A man wakes on the first morning after retiring from forty years at a bus depot. No shift, no keys, no roster. He reaches for the kettle, then for his phone, then for a list of jobs to fill the day, because the quiet feels like an accusation. The avadhuta's song would change the moment in small steps. First, the man could see that the busyness was grip, not need. Then he could let the hand open for a minute and watch what stays: the kettle's sound, the light on the wall, himself still here without a title. The text teaches that the steady drink letting go as nectar, and ordinary experience agrees on one point: a clenched fist tires, and opening it is a relief. The song does not promise that the empty morning will stop feeling strange, that grief for the old work will vanish, or that this can replace help from a doctor or counsellor when low mood sets in and stays.
