Knowing Without Steps

Yoga Sutras 3.33

Meaning · English

Or, out of spontaneous insight, everything comes to be known, with no separate practice needed.

Two words carry this sutra. Pratibha is a flash of insight, from a root meaning to shine. It arrives whole, without reasoning in steps. Sarvam is all, everything. The small word va means or. It offers another road beside the samyama practices of the verses before it. Taken together: insight that lights up on its own can know everything, without the method each earlier power needed. Patanjali says this because the chapter has been giving one power per object of samyama, and a reader could conclude that knowledge always needs a chosen target. This sutra answers that the mind, once steady and clear, can also know without being aimed. Vyasa's Bhashya calls this insight the saving knowledge, which comes before discriminative knowledge as dawn comes before sunrise. Later commentators differ on how it arises and when. The commentators do not treat it as the goal itself. The sutra says nothing about how to produce it, so it describes the insight and gives no method.

A name has slipped your mind all morning. You stop hunting for it and start washing dishes, and it surfaces whole, with no steps behind it. Pratibha is that kind of arrival, only far wider: knowing that comes unforced once the searching has settled.

1. Once today, when you cannot recall a name or a word, stop searching for it and let it go. 2. Do something plain for five minutes, such as washing a cup or walking to the corner. 3. If the answer comes, notice how it came: whole, unforced, without steps. 4. If it does not come, simply note that. Nothing here asks you to produce it.
