The Heart's Awareness
Yoga Sutras 3.34
Meaning · English
By perfectly concentrated meditation on the heart comes awareness of the mind, its movements and its contents.
Three words carry the sutra. Hridaya is the heart, the centre of the body where the mind is said to dwell. Citta is the mind-field, the whole stuff of thoughts, moods and memories. Samvit is awareness, a direct knowing, as when you are simply aware that you are angry. The practice behind it is samyama, the three inner steps of holding, steady attention and absorption taken together on one object. Here the object is the heart. The plain sense is this. When samyama rests on the heart, the mind is known directly, as it is, and not guessed at from outside. Patanjali says this because the whole path works on the citta. Earlier sutras teach that the mind must be stilled, and a mind cannot be stilled until it can be seen. This sutra gives the seat from which to see it. Each samyama in this chapter yields one kind of knowledge, and this one yields knowledge of the mind itself. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the heart as the lotus-like dwelling of the mind in the body, and takes the result as awareness of the mind's own contents. Later readers dispute how literally the heart is meant, and the commentators do not all agree on this.
Picture standing in the hallway of a house where every room opens off one passage. From that spot you see each doorway and who passes through it. The heart is that hallway, and the mind's rooms and comings and goings are seen from there.
1. Once today, sit for two minutes with your hand resting on your chest, in a quiet spot. 2. Do not try to change anything. Only notice what the mind is doing: a plan, a worry, a tune, a mood. 3. Name each one quietly, as you would name passers-by: "planning," "worry." 4. At night, recall one thing you saw in your mind that you usually miss.
