Experience Serves the Seer
Yoga Sutras 3.35
Meaning · English
Experience arises when the clear mind and the seer, though wholly distinct, are not told apart. All experience exists for another's sake. Samyama on what exists for its own sake gives knowledge of the seer.
Four words carry this sutra. Sattva is the mind in its clear, purest state, the part that reflects. Purusha is the seer, the one who witnesses and is not the thing witnessed. Bhoga is experience in the plain sense of undergoing, enjoying and suffering. Samyama is attention, steady focus and full absorption held together on one object. Patanjali says the clear mind and the seer are utterly distinct, yet they are not told apart. That failure to distinguish is what experience is made of. Everything the mind presents, pleasant or painful, exists for another's sake. It is there for the seer, not for itself. The seer, by contrast, exists for its own sake. Samyama on that self-standing nature gives knowledge of the seer. Why say this here? The chapter is full of powers gained by samyama on outer and inner objects. This sutra turns samyama toward the one who sees, which the earlier sutras on the mind's turnings have been pointing to. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes it this way: the mind's content serves the seer, the seer serves nothing else, and knowledge of the seer comes only when samyama is turned on that difference. The later commentators read it in the same direction.
A play is lit and staged for the person in the seat. The actors, the set and the music all exist for that watcher. The watcher does not exist for the stage. Experience is the stage, built for another. The seer is the one sitting in the seat.
1. Once today, pick a ten-minute stretch, such as a walk or a meal, and notice that everything you see, hear and taste is arriving to someone. 2. When a strong feeling comes, say quietly, "This is being shown." Then notice who is watching it. 3. In the evening, sit for two minutes and recall one moment from the day. Notice that you were present for it while it was passing. Do not try to reach anything beyond this noticing.
