Meaning · English
Mother Shiva, in your slender middle there shows, to the wise, a faint shape like the fine ripples of the dark Kalindi river. It seems the sky, thinned by the mutual pressing of your two jar-like breasts, is entering your deep navel.
Three words carry the picture. Madhya is the middle, the waist, which the poem calls krisha, slender. Vyoma is the sky or open space. Nabhi is the navel, here called kuhari, a cave or hollow. The poet looks at the fine line of hair rising above the navel and sees it as the faint ripples of the Kalindi, the dark river Yamuna. Only the sudhi, the people of clear understanding, notice it, because it is subtle. Then he sees a second thing. Her two breasts, shaped like water jars, press against each other and leave almost no room between them. The sky that was caught between them has been squeezed thin, and now seems to slip down into the cave of her navel. So the waist is so slender that even space has to narrow to pass through it. The hymn is praising her form as the Mother's, and the sky entering her is a way of saying that all space is small beside her. The poet has just spoken of this line of hair in the verses before, and here he sets it in a new light, as a stream and as a doorway. The verse does not ask anything of the listener. It asks only that we look as the wise look, with attention fine enough to see what is faint. Lakshmidhara's commentary, as far as the commentators go, reads such pictures as praise of her form and nothing beyond that.
Two water pots pressed side by side on a woman's hip leave a narrow dark gap between them, and a thin stream of light slips through and down. The squeezed gap is the sky between her breasts, and the light running into the dark is space gliding into her navel.
