Meaning · English
Your navel, daughter of the mountain, is a steady whirlpool of the Ganga, the base of the vine of hair that climbs toward your budding breasts, the fire-pit where the flame of Love's god burns, a house of delight, and the secret door of fulfilment for Shiva's eyes. It stands supreme.
The poet gives the navel five names in one breath, and each is a picture. First, a whirlpool of the Ganga. The word is avarta, a turning. The water circles and stays where it is, which is why the poet calls it steady. Second, the root of a creeper. The line of fine hair climbing from it is the vine, and the breasts are its buds. Third, a kunda, a sacrificial fire-pit. The fire in it is the brilliance of Kama, the flower-arrowed god of desire, whom Shiva once burned. Fourth, a house of play for Rati, Kama's consort. Fifth, a bila-dvara, the mouth of a cave, a hidden door. Through it lies the fulfilment, siddhi, of Shiva's eyes. The poet does not say what lies inside. He only calls the door secret. Lakshmidhara and the other commentators read such lines as praise that points past the body. This reading follows the poet's own words and adds nothing to them. The poet is answering a question: how does one praise the Mother's body without shrinking her to a body? He answers with water, fire, vine, house and door, so that each part of her opens onto something larger. He asks nothing of the listener. He sets the pictures down one by one and ends with a plain word of victory: it stands supreme.
A small doorway in the side of a hill shrine, with a lamp burning somewhere behind it. A pilgrim at the threshold sees only the dark opening and a glow, and knows the whole place is for what lies behind. The navel is that doorway in the poet's praise: a plain opening that points beyond itself.
