Steady In Action

Prashna Upanishad 5.6

Meaning · English

The three sounds are mortal when used separately or linked only to each other. But the wise person remains steady when applying them fully to all actions.

Using the sounds of the sacred syllable as fragmented tools leads only to temporary results. When these sounds are integrated into every layer of life—the outer physical world, the inner mental space, and the middle ground between them—they cease to be mere instruments. The person who achieves this integration does not shake or waver. They find a stability that exists regardless of the activity they are performing.

A loose pile of bricks can be knocked over by a light breeze. But when those bricks are bonded with mortar and built into a wall, they become a single, solid structure. The separate sounds are the loose bricks; the integrated life of the wise person is the finished wall.
