For the yogi whose yoga is not yet ripe, and who is still practising, troubles may rise up in the body. For that, this is the rule laid down. Some troubles he burns away by holding the mind steady and by sitting postures joined with that steadiness. Some he burns away by austerity, by mantra, and by medicinal herbs. Some he strikes down by remembering me, by singing my names together, and the like. Or he strikes down the harmful ones by following the lords of yoga.
Krishna is speaking to a practitioner who has begun but not finished. Three words carry the verse. Upasarga means an obstacle; the word suggests something that comes up alongside the practice and gets in its way. Dharana means holding, the steadying of the mind on one place. Anudhyana means remembering, a thinking that follows after, as a child follows a parent. First clause: if yoga is unripe and a person keeps at it, troubles can rise in the body, and a rule exists for them. Second clause: some troubles yield to steady holding of the mind with sitting postures, some to austerity, mantra and herbs. Austerity here is a plain discipline of life, and herbs are ordinary medicine. Third clause: others yield to remembering Krishna, to singing his names with others, and to following the great teachers of yoga, which removes the harmful ones. The commentators read the list as fitting each kind of trouble to its own cure, so no single tool is asked to do everything. This is taught here because the surrounding verses have been speaking of the self beyond name and form, and a listener may fear that practice will go wrong on the way. Krishna answers that trouble is expected, and that help exists at every level, from the body to the heart. He asks only that the listener meet each obstacle with the fitting remedy and not abandon the path.
A cook's kitchen has a remedy for each mishap. A pot boiling over gets the flame turned down, smoke gets a window opened, and a small burn gets cold water. Nobody throws out the stove. Krishna's list works the same way: each trouble in practice has its own fitting answer, and the practice stays.
1. Tonight, write down one thing that gets in the way of your quiet time, such as a stiff back, a busy mind or tiredness. 2. Beside it, write one small remedy of the right kind: a cushion under the hips, five slow breaths before starting, or an earlier bedtime. 3. Tomorrow, sit for five minutes and try that remedy. 4. At the end, say one name of God aloud, or remember Krishna for a moment, and notice whether the trouble felt lighter.
A man begins sitting each morning. By the third week his lower back aches and his mind will not settle, and he wonders whether to quit. The verse would sort the trouble before he gives up. The ache gets a bodily answer: a firmer seat, a change of posture, rest. The restless mind gets steady holding, a few minutes at a time. The rest gets remembrance, a name said slowly. Ordinary experience confirms that a body strained or a night half slept makes any discipline harder, so tending the body is part of the work. The text itself lists herbs and austerity among the remedies, and nothing in it sets practice against care of the body. The verse does not promise that every trouble will lift. Pain that lingers, or comes with numbness, breathlessness or dizziness, belongs with a doctor, and the verse gives no reason to skip that visit.
