Refuge Beyond a Strong Body

Bhagavata Purana 11.28.43

Meaning · English

If the body becomes fit through steady practice of yoga, the wise one who is devoted to me should not put his trust in that. Intent on me, he lets go of yoga as a pursuit of such powers. The yogi who walks this way of yoga with me as his refuge is not struck down by obstacles. Free of craving, he knows the joy that is his own.

Three words carry the teaching. Kalpa means fit, capable: the body made strong and ready by practice. Matpara means intent on me, with Krishna as the aim. Madapashraya means taking me as shelter, leaning one's whole weight on him. Nihspriha means without craving, and svasukhanubhu means one who knows his own joy. Krishna has just said that the body is perishable, like a fruit that ripens and drops. Now he meets the next question. What if practice really does make the body strong? He says the wise person does not rest his trust there. A fit body is a good result, but it is not the shelter. The commentators read the letting go as letting go of yoga pursued for bodily perfection, not of the way itself. The yogi who takes Krishna as refuge walks the same path, but the weight of his trust sits elsewhere. Obstacles then do not knock him down, because his footing never depended on health or on powers. Craving drops away, since nothing is being grasped for. What remains is a joy that belongs to him and is not borrowed from any condition. The teaching asks the listener to keep practising and to ask where he is leaning while he does it.

A traveller crosses a river on a plank bridge. A strong plank is a comfort, but he does not stop and build a house on it. He keeps his eyes on the far bank. The strong body is the plank, and Krishna is the far shore where one actually rests.

1. Tonight, name one thing you rely on to feel secure: your health, your routine, your savings, your skills. 2. Sit for two minutes and ask whether your peace would survive if that thing were taken away for a week. 3. Then say Krishna's name, or any short prayer you already know, slowly, ten times, as a way of putting your weight on him. 4. Notice whether the grip in your chest or jaw loosens even slightly.

A man of sixty-two is discharged from physiotherapy after a bad knee. For weeks he did the exercises every morning, and now he walks the stairs without pain. On the way out he thinks he is good as new and can stop being careful. Then he remembers an older friend who was just as fit and was struck down by an illness anyway. The verse works through the moment in steps. First he is glad of the knee, since the effort was real and the result is good. Then he sees that fitness is a loan and not a deed of ownership. So he keeps the exercises, because the body is still worth caring for, but he stops staking his calm on it. His steadiness comes from somewhere that does not depend on how the knee behaves next winter. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: people who tie their peace to a single condition are shaken when it slips. The verse does not promise that illness will not return, and it does not replace the physiotherapist or the doctor when one is needed.
