Uddhava says: "I think this practice of yoga is very hard for one who has not mastered his own mind. Tell me, Achyuta, the simple way by which a person could reach perfection. Lotus-eyed one, those who try to yoke the mind mostly sink down, because it will not settle. They are worn thin from holding it in check."

Uddhava speaks first as a plain friend, not as a scholar. He has heard Krishna's high teaching and now says what worries him: it looks too hard. Three words carry the verse. Yogacarya is the conduct of yoga, from yuj, to yoke or join. Manonigraha is holding the mind down, from nigraha, restraint. Samadhana is the mind's settling, a putting-together so that it rests in one place. The clauses run in order. First, yoga is hard to walk for anatmanah, someone who does not yet govern himself. Second, he asks for an easy way, and asks twice, so the request is earnest. Third, he reports what he sees in practitioners: they try to yoke the mind and mostly sink, because the mind will not settle. Fourth, the cause of the sinking is the effort itself, since restraining the mind wears them thin. He asks this because Krishna is about to leave, and Uddhava will have to live by the teaching without him. A path only the strong can finish is no use to him. The commentators take the question as a request for a way within reach of ordinary people. What it asks of the listener is honesty. Name where the practice actually breaks down, as Uddhava does, and ask for a way that fits.

Picture holding a squirming cat against your chest. The tighter you squeeze, the harder it twists, and soon your arms ache and it has slipped away anyway. Forcing the mind into stillness works the same way: the grip itself is what exhausts the one gripping.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and try to hold your attention on your breath by force. Notice when you tire and where the strain sits. 2. Write one sentence naming exactly where a practice of yours breaks down, in Uddhava's plain way. 3. Say that sentence aloud to someone you trust, or to Krishna, and ask for an easier way. 4. Stop when the effort turns to strain.

A man wakes at five, sits on a cushion with a loan payment on his mind, and tries to push every thought out. By the third minute his jaw is tight. By the tenth he is thinking about the loan more than before, and he gets up feeling he has failed at something simple. Uddhava's complaint fits that moment. He does not say the goal is wrong. He says the method of gripping the mind wears people out, and that people sink instead of settle. Seeing this, the man could stop calling himself weak. He could treat the tiredness as information about the method. He could then ask, as Uddhava does, for a way that suits a tired person. In the text, Krishna's answer to that request is where the teaching goes next. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: forced attention tires quickly, and a tired mind wanders more. The verse does not promise that asking makes the loan, or the worry, disappear. Nor does it replace a doctor if low mood or anxiety is heavy and lasting.
