Lotus-eyed Lord of all, wise swans take refuge in your lotus feet, which milk out bliss. That is easy, beside the labour of yoga and ritual, and the proud, caught in your maya, fall short. Is it strange, Achyuta, friend of all, that you give yourself to servants who have no other shelter? You took delight in living among the wild creatures, though the shining crowns of the lords of the gods struck against your footstool.
Uddhava has just said that the discipline of yoga is very hard for an unsteady mind. Now he says what he would do instead. Three words carry it. Hamsa is the swan, who is said to separate milk from water, so it stands for the discerning person. Maya is the power by which Krishna makes the world look like the whole story, and it holds the proud, not the humble. Ananyasharana means having no other refuge, one door only. The first verse says that discerning people go to Krishna's feet, which give bliss the way a cow gives milk. This is easy, he says, compared with yoga and ritual action. Those who rely on their own cleverness and effort are defeated by maya. The second verse answers a doubt. Is it odd that Krishna gives himself to those who depend on him alone? Uddhava says no. This is the friend of all beings, who once chose to live among animals while the crowns of great gods bowed at his footstool. The commentators read that as his humility with those who love him. It is taught here because Uddhava asked for a path that works for ordinary people. His answer is that Krishna himself is the way, and the only thing asked is to hold to him.
A child lost in a crowded fair can spend an hour working out the map and the signposts, or can simply run to the parent's waiting arms. Yoga and ritual are the map. The feet of Krishna are the parent's open arms, and the child needs only to run there.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and name one task today that you carried as if everything depended on you alone. 2. Say aloud, in your own words, "I give this to you," to whatever you hold as God or as your highest good. 3. Tomorrow, when the same worry returns, repeat that sentence once, slowly, and go back to your work. 4. Keep this up for a week, and notice whether your shoulders and jaw loosen.
A woman in her fifties sits on the edge of her bed at night. For years she has tried to calm her mind by will alone, with schedules, rules and strict self-correction, and today she has failed again. She feels she is simply not good at being steady. Uddhava's words change that moment in steps. First they say the effort was heavy by its nature, not that she was weak. Then they name another way: turning toward one beloved presence and resting on it, instead of gripping the mind harder. Then they say such a presence does not hold back from the one who has no other refuge. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind clenched against itself tires, while one turned toward someone trusted often settles. The text's own teaching goes further: it says Krishna gives himself to those who depend on him alone, and that is the text's claim, not something a doctor could measure. The limit is plain. Turning to Krishna does not promise that the worry vanishes or that the night will be easy. Persistent sleeplessness, low mood or dread are matters for a doctor, whatever one's devotion.
