Who that remembers what he has been given would turn away from you, the Self of all, the dearest, the Lord who grants every aim to those who shelter in you? Who would worship you for some other gain, even for forgetting, or for wealth? What would we lack, who share the dust of your feet? The wise cannot repay you, Lord, even with the lifespan of Brahma, remembering your joy. Within and outside every embodied being you shake off what is harmful, showing your own path as the guide within and as the teacher in a body.
Uddhava asks two questions and then gives a confession. First: who would leave Krishna once they know what he has done for them? Krishna is the self of all beings, so he is not far off. He is also dayita, the dearest, and the lord who gives every worthwhile aim. Second: who would worship him for something else, such as release from forgetting or a rise in fortune? Those who share the dust of his feet already lack nothing. Then comes the confession. The wise, kavis, cannot make apaciti, repayment, even with a lifespan as long as Brahma's, because they keep remembering the joy he gave. His gift is that he removes what harms living beings, from inside and outside. Inside, he is the caitya, the guide in the heart. Outside, he is the acharya, the teacher who takes a body and speaks. The commentators read the two as one help given in two ways. Uddhava says this because he has just asked how an unsteady person can follow a hard path. His answer is that the path is carried by the one who shows it. Nothing here asks the listener to pay anything. It asks only that the gift be seen.
A child learning to ride a bicycle runs along the road with a parent's hand steadying the seat, then lets go without announcing it. The child never sees how many times the hand was there. Krishna's help works like that hand, inside and outside, unseen, and so beyond any bill.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and recall one person who steadied you at a bad time, whether a teacher, relative or stranger. 2. Do not plan how to repay them. Just let the memory be complete, including the small details. 3. Tomorrow, say or write them one honest sentence of thanks, without asking anything back. 4. Notice whether the thanks feels like paying off a debt or like a gift passing along.
A grown son sits with a stack of papers at his aunt's kitchen table. She raised him after his father died, and now he is adding up what he owes: school fees, rent, years of meals. The sum will not come out. He feels the old pressure to settle the account before she dies. Uddhava's speech changes the arithmetic. A debt that cannot be repaid stops being a bill and becomes something to remember. The son can stop adding and start noticing what she actually did, from the late-night soup to the quiet word before an exam. Then he can thank her, visit, and help with what she needs now, without pretending any of it clears the account. Ordinary experience bears this out: people who keep score with those who love them often feel tight and defensive, while plain thanks lets both sides relax. The verse is about Krishna's help, which the text teaches as inner and outer guidance. It does not remove the son's grief, and it does not replace practical care for an ageing aunt, nor a doctor if she is unwell.
