Listen now. I will tell you my dharmas, the ways that bring every good. A mortal who follows them with faith conquers death, so hard to conquer.
Krishna opens his last teaching with a promise and an invitation. Three words carry it. Dharma is what holds a life up, from the root dhri, to bear or support. Here it means the ways of living Krishna is about to lay out, and he calls them his own. Sumangala means very auspicious: each step is good in itself, and none is a hardship to be endured for a later prize. Shraddha is faith, but closer to trust that is acted on. It is the confidence that makes a person actually begin and keep going. Krishna says a mortal who practises these dharmas with shraddha conquers death, and he calls death durjaya, hard to conquer. The word martya, mortal, is chosen on purpose: the promise is made to someone who will die. The commentators generally take death here as the whole round of birth and dying, not only the last breath. Krishna says this because Uddhava has asked to follow him and has found his own strength too small. The answer is not that Uddhava should come along. It is that there are practices, within reach of anyone, that reach past death. Uddhava is asked to listen, and then to take up what follows with trust.
A handrail on a dark staircase. You cannot see the steps, but you keep a hand on the rail and climb. The rail is the dharmas, the hand holding on is faith, and the dark landing is death, which the climber still reaches.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and name one habit of kindness, prayer or honesty you already trust, however small. 2. Do that one thing at the same hour tomorrow and the day after, without adding anything. 3. Afterward, notice whether doing it as a plain duty, rather than waiting to feel inspired, makes it easier to return to.
A daughter sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning. The doctor has said her father may not last the week, and she has no idea what to do with her hands or her mind. The verse would change the moment in small steps. Krishna promises dharmas that are good in themselves, practised with trust. So she does not have to settle the largest question tonight. She can sit with him, say the prayer her mother taught her, hold his hand and drink some water. Each act is a dharma of the plain sort, and each is complete when it is done. Ordinary experience confirms that a few steady acts carry people through a night when argument and worry cannot. The verse does not promise that her father will recover, that grief will be lighter, or that fear will leave. It does not stand in for the doctors, who should be asked every question she has. The conquest of death is the text's own promise about the self and birth and dying, offered for those who practise with faith.
