Let him do every task for my sake, going slowly, remembering me, his mind and thought laid in my hands, his heart's delight set on my dharma. Let him go to holy places, those where my good devotees have settled. Among gods, demons and human beings, let him take up the ways of my devotees. Alone, or together with others, let him hold festivals for me: pilgrimages on sacred days and great celebrations, with song, dance and the like, with the splendour of a great king.

Three verses, one movement: from the hands, to the places, to the crowd. First, work. Krishna asks that all tasks be done madarthaṃ, for my sake. The next word is smaran, remembering, from the root smṛ, to bring to mind. The tasks are the same ones; the reason under them changes. He adds śanakaiḥ, slowly or gently. The remembering is not forced in a rush. It is built a little at a time, as a habit grows. Mind and thought are laid with him, and the heart's delight rests in his dharma, meaning the way of life he has just begun describing. Second, place and company. He names holy places that devotees have made their home, and says to take up the conduct of his devotees, whether among gods, demons or humans. The point is that devotion shows itself in how people live, in every sort of birth. Third, festival. Alone, or in a group, he asks for pilgrimages on sacred days and great celebrations, with singing and dancing, and the splendour a king would have. Why teach this here? Uddhava has asked how to live once Krishna is gone. Krishna answers with something anyone can do: ordinary work, a journey, a shared celebration, all turned toward him. What he asks of the listener is to bring him into the day's tasks, to go where devotion is alive, and to let it be joyful and public.

Before a family wedding, one person chops, another sweeps, another carries chairs, another strings flowers. The jobs are all different and none is grand, yet every hand is working for the same bride. In the same way, each task of an ordinary day can be done for one person.

1. Pick one routine task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the bus, and do it at half your usual speed for ten minutes. 2. Before you start, name Krishna silently, and say: this one is for you. 3. When your mind wanders, bring it back gently, without scolding yourself. 4. This week, visit a temple, shrine or gathering of devotees, and stay for one song or one aarti, sitting among others.

A man is carrying his father's folded wheelchair up the steps of a hill shrine. The crowd is pushing, his back aches, and he is annoyed. The verse would change the moment in steps. The carrying becomes an offering for Krishna's sake, which gives it a reason beyond the chore. He slows down and remembers Krishna as he climbs. He notices the place is held by people who come for the same purpose, and that the singing at the top is shared, not private. Ordinary experience agrees on a small point: a tiring task weighs less when it has a reason a person cares about, and a crowd singing together can steady someone who arrived alone with worry. The verse does not promise that the steps get shorter, that his back stops hurting, or that his father recovers. It does not replace a doctor for his father's illness or a rest for his own body. It gives him a way to be present for the climb, in company, without feeling the day is wasted.
