Meaning · English

With a clean heart, let him see me alone in every being, outside and within, with nothing covering me. Let him see the self in the self, as the sky is everywhere. So, radiant Uddhava, honoring all beings as holding my presence, and regarding them so, he rests on knowledge alone.

Krishna gives Uddhava one way of looking, and he names its parts. Amalashaya means a clean heart: mala is dirt, ashaya is what lies in the heart, so envy, contempt and pride are the dirt. Apavrta means uncovered, from vr, to cover, with the a- of negation: Krishna is present in every being without a veil, outside the body and within. Sabhajayan means honoring, giving a person real respect. Kevala jnana means knowledge alone, with no other support. The first verse asks for two sights at once: Krishna in every being, and the self in oneself, spread out like the open sky, which holds everything and is stained by nothing. The commentators read the sky as that likeness. The second verse draws the conclusion: since every being carries him, each is honored, and the knower stays steady in that knowing. Krishna teaches it now because Uddhava wanted to follow him, and Krishna is about to leave. The teaching shows where Krishna can still be found after he is gone: in the people around Uddhava. It asks him to meet each person as someone in whom Krishna is present.

A lit lamp is wrapped first in red silk, then in a torn sack, then in a clay pot with holes. The light shows through each, and the cloth changes only how it looks. Each being is a covering of that kind, and the verse says the same light is inside every one.

1. Today, choose one person you usually pass without looking at, such as a guard, a cleaner or a delivery boy. 2. Before you speak to them, pause for one breath and tell yourself silently that Krishna is present in them too. 3. Greet them by name if you know it, and give them your full attention for the length of one exchange. 4. In the evening, note whether anything in you softened, and where contempt or hurry came up instead.

A woman is bargaining at a crowded vegetable stall. The seller snaps at her, and she feels her own temper rise, ready to snap back. Krishna's teaching changes that moment in steps. She notices the heat in her chest before she answers. She remembers that the text says Krishna is in this tired man too, uncovered and unstained by his bad mood. Her reply slows down. She may still bargain, but she bargains with respect, and the exchange ends without a wound on either side. Ordinary experience says that we are sharper with strangers when we are tired and hurried, so this kind of looking has to be practised in small moments. The teaching does not promise that the seller will soften, that her anger will never return, or that every dispute will end well. It does not ask her to put up with abuse or to ignore real danger. It asks her to look, again and again, until respect is the way she meets people.
