The Level Gaze
Bhagavata Purana 11.29.14
Meaning · English
The wise one is held to be the one whose sight is level: the same toward a learned brahmin and an outcaste, a thief and a giver of honour to brahmins, the sun and a tiny spark, the gentle and the cruel.
Three words carry it. Samadrik joins sama, level or the same, with drik, sight: a person whose gaze does not tilt. Pandita is the learned or wise one. Pulkasa is a person born outside the respected castes, at the bottom of the ranking Krishna's listeners knew. Krishna lists pairs that the world sorts into high and low: the learned brahmin and the outcaste, the thief and the man who honours brahmins, the great sun and a spark, the kind and the cruel. He says the wise are held to look at each pair and see the same. Sameness here is of what is present in each, not of what each does. The verse does not say the thief and the giver behave alike, and it does not say cruelty is harmless. The commentators read it as sight that goes beneath rank and behaviour to the one presence Krishna has just described in 11.29.12. It answers the question of how that teaching looks in a crowd of unequal people. The test of wisdom is not what a person has read or can recite. It is whether the gaze stays level when a beggar, a robber or a king walks in.
Water poured from one tap fills a clay cup, a silver cup and a chipped enamel mug. The cups differ in worth and shape, and the water in each is the same water. The wise gaze sees the water in every cup, whatever the cup looks like.
1. Choose one hour today when you will meet several people, such as a commute, a market or a family meal. 2. Each time you catch yourself silently ranking someone (useless, rude, important, low), stop and note it. 3. For that person, say inwardly, "the same presence is here as in me." Do not change how you act. 4. At night, count how many times you caught the ranking, and for whom it came most often.
A woman waits on a railway platform when a pickpocket is caught beside her. The crowd closes in, and before she has thought anything she has already filed him: vermin, not a person. Krishna's teaching would slow that one step. She could still call for the guard and keep her bag close. But she would see that the label came from her fear and not from knowing him, and that under the label stands a man with a mother and a hunger of his own. Her sight would stay level while her judgment of the act stayed firm. Ordinary experience bears this out: when we are frightened or angry, our labels harden fast and our attention to the actual person narrows. The verse does not promise that she will feel warmth toward him, or that he will stop stealing. It does not ask her to excuse the theft or to ignore real danger. It asks only that she not mistake the act for the whole of the person, and it says that is what the wise do.
