Meaning · English
For one who keeps seeing my presence in people, again and again, rivalry, envy and contempt, together with pride, soon fall away. Setting aside the laughter of his own people, and the embarrassment that belongs to the body, let him bow down flat on the ground, like a fallen staff, even before the dog, the outcaste, the cow and the donkey.
Krishna names four things that go when a person keeps seeing him in others. Spardha is rivalry, the steady measuring of yourself against someone. Asuya is envy, the habit of finding fault in what another has. Tiraskara is contempt, treating a person as beneath notice. Ahankara is the I-maker, the pride that holds the other three together. Krishna says they leave quickly, because each one needs a person you rank above or below you, and that ranking gets harder to keep when you see him in the person. Then he turns to the body. Others may laugh, and the body feels shame. He asks Uddhava to set both aside and bow full length to the ground, daṇḍavat, like a staff falling. He names the dog, the outcaste, the cow and the donkey so that no one is left out of the bow. Uddhava has been told to see Krishna everywhere. Here Krishna gives the practice that makes the seeing real, because a belief held only in the mind gets overruled the moment someone annoys you. The bow trains the body to agree with what the mind has accepted. What it asks of the listener is to let the sight work on pride, and to bow even when bowing is awkward.
At a community meal, everyone sits on the floor in one long row, the landlord beside the labourer, and the ranking that held in the street quietly loosens. Bowing to the ground does the same inside a person: the body lowers itself, and the habit of looking up or down at people loses its footing.
1. Today, when you feel a sting of envy or a flicker of scorn toward someone, stop for the length of one breath and bow your head slightly toward them in your mind. 2. Once this week, in a private spot, bow low to the floor, then stand and notice what your pride did. 3. Bow to a person you usually pass by, such as a cleaner or a guard, with a nod and a greeting.
A man stands at his younger brother's new shop opening, smiling for photographs while his stomach is tight. He keeps counting what the shop cost, what it will earn, and why it was not him. The verse speaks to that tightness. Step by step: first he notices the counting, which is rivalry at work. Then he looks at his brother as someone in whom Krishna is present, and the comparison has less to hold on. The text says the bow follows, and even a small one, a hand on the brother's shoulder or touching his feet, puts the body on the side of the heart before pride can argue. Ordinary experience agrees that envy eases when we stop watching the scoreboard and start looking at the person. The verse does not promise that the man will feel no pang tomorrow, and it does not settle real disputes over money or fairness, which still need honest talk. It also does not replace care for a heavy, lasting resentment that may need a counsellor or doctor.
